How to save hours and get better results as a leader

"The best way of saving lots of time is to drop the weekly reporting meetings and to move to daily & short standups. And then extend trust."

Something I said to one of the women I work with.

Let me take step back though.

One of the most important and rare resources of the leaders I work with is….time. And the biggest challenge: not having enough of it. And to be more relaxed. So here's a way of achieving both…while getting results.

So - last week I spoke to one of my clients and we talked about the heat, how different people have different (daily) rhythms and preferences and how those could be accommodated.

"So, if people come in early and leave early or the opposite…how do I then know that the work is really done?", she wondered. The not-so-uncommon desire to control what people doing.

When I asked her how she normally checks that, she mentioned the typical weekly meeting where the direct reports...

The 7 most significant mistakes I made as a parent

I’ve been a mum now for the last 27 years. And I can’t even begin to count all the mistakes I made. “Ah, we all do”, you might say. And yes, that is true. Particularly in this area, as for me, this is the toughest job in the world.

It’s not just a phrase, I know it. After all, I’ve raised my 2 children, mainly on my own. With hardly any support.

I provided both  - a boy and a girl – with the same opportunities, the same affection and the same rules. The path and process were stunningly different. The results too.

Hindsight is a great thing, right? It allows us to learn and to adapt. Which I clearly did. Still, I know I could have avoided some significant mistakes, had I started at the right end: Me.

This is my motivation to share. As it might avoid some horrifically tricky situations. Or at least give you the certainty that you’re not alone, and it might give you so much more peace of mind when it comes to your children, seeing...

Why 9 out of 10 conversations simply miss the mark (and what to do about that)

I’m living with my partner. And raised two children. I worked in a number of corporates and have started two businesses. So, I had my fair share (and still going on) of conversations. And quite a lot of them were also difficult.

A gigantic playing field for learning how to have successful conversations. Or to mess them up and miss the mark. I succeeded in both.

Missing the mark

According to research done by Stanford University, 9 out of 10 conversations miss the mark.

What do I mean by missing the mark?

Well, that’s fairly simple: when there is no result. Or not the desired one.

When we fall into set patterns instead of using our conversational skills to create trust and healthy connections. When we talk past each other instead of with other, maybe even banging our heads or letting fear and judgement taking over.

Every conversation has some objective: maybe just a simple sharing of information, maybe tasking someone with something, maybe to find solutions for issues,...

Conversational Intelligence in The Digital World is Key

"It's easier to deal with processes and technical things than with people" - one of the first things Christian told me in our recent chat (which we happened to record - and hence you can watch it here. Lucky you ;-)).

Christian Delez is Agile Software Leader at RUAG Defence and Co-founder of www.responsive.org  - an organisation who is looking into the future of work - hence the perfect person to ask some questions around the topic I've been looking into for a while now.

I asked Christian a number of questions around humans in the digital transformation - something that goes in almost every organisation on this planet right now - after all we're living in the middle of the digital era.

We touched upon topics like fear, creating space for difficult conversations, how to deal with mistakes and conversational intelligence - and what makes a good (digital) leader.

Enjoy!

Why Visualizing your Work Gets things done faster…and increases trust

Have you ever had the feeling that despite your best intentions and efforts you cannot escape the fact that your life has become not only complicated, but also rather complex and super busy most of the time with workloads which seem to be unmanageable?

Work – tasks – responsibilities, deadlines or even re-creative activities compete for our attention….and as we know, our brain is not good at handling multiple things at the same time.

Finally this makes you feel overwhelmed and out of control.

Well – I definitely know the feeling.

When – years ago - I found myself as a single mom with a full time job and eventually my own business, I struggled a lot getting things done and sometimes, after a super busy day, I often had the feeling that I had achieved nothing, or at least not much….despite working all day.

I tried a lot of productivity tools - none of them with a lasting effect. Sounds familiar?

The revelation…and a...
